The best ocean views in Uluwatu come from villas on higher ground set back from the cliffs, not from the beach itself. At House of Reservations, five villas have genuine sea views: Ahimsa Uluwatu (5 bedrooms, sleeps 10), Villa Veluna and Villa Mabu (2 bedrooms each), and the two one-bedroom villas at Munay Wasi, Batu Karu and Q’ente.
Uluwatu sits on the Bukit Peninsula, a raised limestone headland at Bali’s southern tip. That height is why it’s the best place on the island to wake up to the Indian Ocean. It’s also why “ocean view” on a listing can mean very different things. Some villas look straight out to the horizon from the pool. Others show you a strip of blue between the rooftops, and only from upstairs.
Below we explain what to look for, then walk you through the five villas we manage in Uluwatu where the view is a real part of the stay.
What does “ocean view” actually mean in Uluwatu?
Most of Uluwatu’s coast is sheer cliff, and building right on the edge is limited. So the best views usually come from height, not from being close to the sand. You’ll mostly see three kinds:
- Horizon views from higher ground. The land rises inland from the cliffs, high enough to look over the treetops to open water. Most true ocean-view villas in Uluwatu are here.
- Upstairs-only views. You can see the sea from a rooftop or a second-floor balcony, but not from the pool. Lovely at sunset. Just don’t expect it from bed.
- Cliff-front views. Rare and usually at the top of the price range. Spectacular, but often further from cafés and the beach-club strip.
A quick way to check before you book: look at which way the pool faces in the photos. If the pool shot has the horizon in it, the view is the point of the villa. If every sea photo is taken from a balcony, treat the view as a bonus.
Why the sunsets here are so good
Uluwatu faces the open ocean to the west, so on a clear evening the sun goes down straight into the sea. If your villa has an ocean-facing pool or balcony, you can watch it from home instead of queuing for a table at a clifftop bar. The dry season, roughly April to October, usually gives the clearest skies.
The 5 ocean-view villas we recommend in Uluwatu
Three of these villas, Ahimsa, Veluna and Mabu, sit within a couple of hundred metres of each other on the same rise near Jalan Batu Kandik. That rise is the reason all three see the water. The other two are at Munay Wasi, a small eco-retreat further east.
1. Ahimsa Uluwatu: room for the whole group (5 bedrooms)

Ahimsa is the one to look at if you’re travelling as a big group. It sleeps up to 10 across five bedrooms and six bathrooms. The balconies are wide enough for everyone at sunset, and the private pool sits in the middle of it all. There’s a full kitchen, indoor and outdoor dining and a covered gazebo, so people can spread out instead of fighting over one good spot.
- Sleeps 10 · 5 bedrooms · private pool · ocean-view balconies
- About 9 to 10 minutes by car to Suluban, Uluwatu, Nyang Nyang and Padang Padang beaches
- Works well for family trips, friends’ getaways and small milestone celebrations
2. Villa Veluna: a bathtub that faces the sea (2 bedrooms)
Veluna is one of our newest villas in Uluwatu, and the view was clearly part of the design. The pool faces the ocean, and so does the bathtub. Clean modern lines and a Mediterranean feel run across two bright floors. Two bedrooms make it a good fit for a couple who want space, or two couples travelling together.
- Sleeps 4 · 2 bedrooms · ocean-facing private pool · ocean-view bathtub
- About 9 minutes from Nyang Nyang Beach
- Works well for honeymoons, anniversaries and slow-stay couples
3. Villa Mabu: Veluna’s next-door neighbour (2 bedrooms)
Mabu is right next to Veluna and gets the same view. The pool looks out to sea, and the master bedroom has a bathtub facing the water. The living spaces are open to the air, and there’s an outdoor dining table for two, so long lazy afternoons at home are easy. Guests rate it 4.8 out of 5 on our site.
- Sleeps 4 · 2 bedrooms · ocean-view pool with sun loungers · sea-facing master bath
- About 9 minutes from Nyang Nyang Beach
- Works well for couples, small families and friends who like privacy
4. Villa Batu Karu at Munay Wasi: thatched roof, infinity lagoon pool (1 bedroom)
Batu Karu is a proper hideaway. A traditional thatched roof and a conical ceiling sit over a one-bedroom villa with an infinity lagoon pool looking out to the sea. Organic linens, a semi-open tropical bathroom and a good coffee machine finish it off. It’s one of our most-reviewed Uluwatu villas, averaging 4.9 out of 5 from more than 160 ratings.
- Sleeps 2 · 1 bedroom · infinity lagoon pool with sea views
- Works well for honeymooners and anyone who wants to switch off completely
5. Villa Q’ente at Munay Wasi: up in the trees (1 bedroom)
Q’ente is Batu Karu’s sister villa at Munay Wasi. It sits higher, up among the trees, with the same infinity lagoon pool and sea views, plus a full kitchen that makes longer stays easy. It averages 4.9 out of 5 from more than 180 ratings, which tells you the view matches the photos.
- Sleeps 2 · 1 bedroom · infinity lagoon pool with sea views · full kitchen
- Works well for couples and slow travellers staying a week or more

How do you choose the right ocean-view villa?
- Decide where you want the view. From the pool and living room, or is a sunset balcony enough? That one question cuts the list in half.
- Match the size to your group. Couples have plenty of choice in the one- and two-bedroom villas. Groups of six to ten should start with Ahimsa.
- Expect a short drive to the beach. Elevated villas trade beach access for the view. Plan on a few minutes by scooter or car.
- Book early for peak dates. Ocean-view villas are usually the first to go over the holidays.
- Ask us. Not sure if a view is from the pool or the rooftop? Our team knows these villas first-hand and can send you extra photos.

Frequently asked questions
Which part of Uluwatu has the best ocean views?
Higher ground set back from the western cliffs usually has the clearest horizon views, because the land rises above the treetops. Cliff-front spots have dramatic views too, but they are rare and often further from cafés and beaches.
Is there an ocean-view villa in Uluwatu for a large group?
Yes. Ahimsa Uluwatu has five bedrooms and six bathrooms, sleeps up to 10 guests, and has panoramic ocean views from its pool and balconies.
Can you watch the sunset from a villa in Uluwatu?
Yes. Uluwatu faces the open Indian Ocean to the west, so villas with ocean-facing pools or balconies can watch the sun set over the water on clear evenings.
When is the best time to visit Uluwatu for clear ocean views?
The dry season, roughly April to October, usually brings the clearest skies and the best sunsets.
Are ocean-view villas in Uluwatu close to the beach?
Usually a short drive rather than a walk, because the views come from elevation. Ahimsa, for example, is about 9 to 10 minutes by car from Suluban, Uluwatu, Nyang Nyang and Padang Padang beaches.
